How Pelvic Floor Therapy Helps With Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence — which is defined as the involuntary leakage of urine — is more common than you may think. It strikes people of all ages, but particularly women following childbirth or during menopause and men after prostate surgery. Yet, as widespread as it is, plenty of people struggle alone, are shamed, or are unaware of treatment possibilities.

At Shoppers World Physiotherapy, we believe that no one should have to live with the worry and inconvenience of bladder problems. That’s where pelvic floor therapy can help: a safe, non-invasive, and highly effective means of regaining your control (and confidence).

What Is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy is a type of physiotherapy that helps you strengthen and relax the muscles around the bladder, uterus, rectum, and bowel. These muscles are crucial for urinary function, and if they are weak, overactive, or out of sync, they can contribute to urinary incontinence.

Types of Urinary Incontinence Pelvic Floor Therapy Can Help With

Stress Incontinence: Leakage when you are physically active, such as coughing, sneezing, or exercising.

Urge Incontinence (Overactive Bladder): Urges to urinate that come on very fast and are very strong can be followed by leakage.

Mixed Incontinence: A mix of stress and urge incontinence.

Functional Incontinence: Occurs when physical or mental limitations prevent an individual from reaching the bathroom in time.

How Pelvic Floor Therapy Helps

Muscle Strengthening: One of the significant causes of stress incontinence is a weak pelvic floor muscle. Your therapist guides you through exercises such as Kegels, which help you rebuild strength so you can better hold your bladder and avoid leaks.

Improved Muscle Coordination: In urge incontinence, it’s not always weakness that’s the problem — it’s also timing. Pelvic floor therapy teaches you how to contract and release the correct muscles at the right time, lessening urgency and frequency.

Bladder Training: Your physiotherapist can help you retrain your bladder—gradually increasing the time between voiding—and learn to control a high urgency to urinate.

Biofeedback & E-stim: Advanced methods, such as biofeedback, enable you to observe and even feel how your pelvic muscles react during therapy. In some cases, mild electrical stimulation can also be beneficial for stimulating and retraining the muscles of the pelvic floor.

Advisories on Lifestyle and Posture: Therapists will also address lifestyle issues — such as how much and when you drink, diet, and posture — that can impact bladder function. Small changes can be powerful in the context of therapy.

  • Childbearing women or those in menopause
